Fishing out on the Missouri continues to be very productive, if you know how to get the moss off you’re fly in a hurry. The mornings are definitely more productive than the evenings with massive Trico spinner falls happening daily around 8:30 or 9:00 am. Last evening CrossCurrents Owner Chris Strainer went out and caught this beauty above the Craig Bridge just before dark. The evenings have been a lot more finicky than we’re used to for this time of year – the caddis hatch just hasn’t been too impressive all year. There’s also a bit a hopper fishing throughout the day just depending on the day and the stretch of river you’re fishing.
A few flies that have been working for the CrossCurrents shop folks are PMD and BWO spinners in 16, 18, and 20. Hi-Vis Trico Spinners and various midge and Trico cluster patterns. Another good option is a Hopper-Dropper rig with a nice foam Morrish in a 10 or 12 with a 18-20 Lightning Bug or Flash-Back Peasant Tail a few feet below. In the evenings, a mix of caddis and parachute adams should be just about all you’d need to get into fish. August is usually the toughest month on this river, and this August has been no different. This is the time where skill level really ups your fish count at the end of the day. Come in the our shop along the Missouri River in Craig and our friendly staff can get you all the flies you need and information about catching these large trout on tiny dry flies.
Tight Lines,
